Its a wonderful thing that you have experience as a java programmer because most of the the SAP newer initiatives, It involves java or java script. Most abaper these days are trying to learn java script and SQL.
So dont restrict yourself to just ABAP , Get your self intune with the SAP initiative (many of these material your will find in open.sap.com )
Good luck with your career in SAP world as an application developer( not necessarily just ABAPer).
